The United States urged Iraq on Monday to investigate the "hateful" killing of demonstrators, and condemned what it described as excessive force in the volatile southern city of Nasiriyah.
The top US diplomat in charge of the Middle East said: The use of excessive force during the weekend in Nasiriyah was appalling. We call on the Iraqi government to investigate those who are trying to brutally silence peaceful protesters and hold them accountable, he said.
The Wasit Court of Appeal on Sunday issued the first death sentence against an Iraqi officer, and sentenced to seven years imprisonment against another officer, convicted of killing demonstrators in Wasit province, during the protests in Iraq since the beginning of last October.
