The meeting of the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, on the sidelines of his participation in the World Economic Forum held in the Swiss city of Davos, sparked widespread political controversy in Iraq.

While deputies and politicians see the meeting as a betrayal of the martyrs, especially after the American strike near Baghdad airport, which targeted the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Organization, the martyr Abu Mahdi Al Muhanids and commander Qasim Soleimani, others stress the need to invest in the global forum to clarify Iraq’s vision of the events in the region, as well as to strengthen external relations.

The President of the Republic, Barham Salih, arrived in Switzerland last Tuesday on an official visit to attend the Davos Economic Forum.

Salih and his American counterpart, Donald Trump, discussed the future of the military presence of foreign forces and reducing their numbers in the country, and the importance of respecting the demands of the Iraqi people in preserving national sovereignty and ensuring security and stability.
