The Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources confirmed on Tuesday that salinity in Shat al-Arab waters has dropped to a value of 3000 total dissolved solids (TDS). The Water Resources Ministry’s undersecretary for technical affairs, Hussian Abdul Amir, confirmed to INA that: “Comprehensive and running tests show that salinity has dropped from over 20,000 to 3000 TDS.” Referring the likely reasons for this drop in water salinity to “the heavy rains witnessed by Basra governorate and the country as a whole, on the one hand, and the increase in water releases to Basra on the other.”
Mr. Abdul Amir drew attention too to his ministry’s relentless efforts, in cooperation with the local Basra government, to solve the problem of drinking water through a series of projects which were executed there, including the Abu al-Khasib pumping station which was opened lately with a capacity of 3000 cm/hr.
